Friday is back and it's time to reflect on the past week. Did you attain all your goals this week?
I achieved most of my goals and I will continue to work on others and start new goals.
Reflection is such a wonderful word with so many meanings. I chose the above quote because I believe that it reflects nurses in the work place quite well. Nurses give so much and although at times we don't feel like we get it back, we do. For many of us a simple thank you is all we need to feel appreciated. But you have to come at each situation no matter how difficult with a positive attitude. Is that easy? absolutely NOT! There are days I want to scream and rant at all the silliness that I see on a daily basis. I know that if I do that I could get into to trouble. I may have a smile on my face but that does not mean that I don't have colourful metaphors' going through my head. I want people to be at ease when I am working with them and I try to do that but there are some personalities that just don't mesh with mine, but I still try to be positive.
As nurses we are in many situations that can be very trying. Try to remember that these people are human and they have emotions that are running high. When they look back, they will realize that they are taking out their emotions and stress on you. We bare it with as much grace as possible even thought it can be very daunting. Reflect on a time you had a situation that was very difficult for you. Write about it in your inspiration journal. Now think of things from the perspective of the other person and what they might have been thinking or going through that had them in that situation. Think about ways that you can defuse a situation, or how to talk to someone in a difficult situation. Write them down in your journal.
By writing things down you are reflecting on the past and trying to find new ways to cope and change your practise into a more positive and knowledgeable experience.
